At first let me clear myself. Shaurya is neither a war movie nor a patriotic one. It a movie about an army court martial and I must say that Shaurya stands out on this field greatly. On the whole Shaurya is a good movie with a serious issue that hasn’t been deal much time in Hindi movie before.
If you have seen Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore starrer “A Few Good Men” [Directed By – Rob Reiner] before, you will definitely get a resemblance of Shaurya. But where Shaurya stands out, is the execution of movie in the backdrop of Indian Army.
Shaurya deals with some serious matter and director Samar Khan pushed you gradually to this subject and showing you some utmost details of court martial, you have never seen before on Bollywood silver screen.
It’s a story of Captain Javed Khan [Deepak Dobriyal], charged for murdering his colleague officer and held in court martial. He denied speaking in his defense as the truth he carries is too strong to handle for the authority. Sid [Rahul Bose], a confident individual, lawyer and ambitious to make his career, assigned for the task for Javed, on the other hand his buddy Akash [Jaaved Jaaferi] assigned as the authority lawyer and this case took them to Shrinagar, where they mate Brigadier Pratap [Kay Kay Menon] and the hell broke.
These peoples lives gonna role and they all find a different meaning of life through this process of investigation. What compelled Javed to remain silent? What secrets he holds? Is Sid having the courage to save Javed, which can cost his whole career? Find all answers in the movie. These things should be left unfolded.
Shaurya has some moments that you bring back with you after the show is over. Mostly the investigation part, the last court room drama especially where Rahul Bose questioning KK about the condemned is brilliant.
Though the script of Shaurya isn’t perfect, it have some flaws. A 15 – 20 mints shorter could have been better. There is no space for songs in this kind of movie, and the twos of Shaurya not so effective that you can remember them, still “Dheere Dheere” is melodious.
Even though Shaurya has some flaws, still its screenplay delivers what it promises. Cinematography by Carlos Catalan is splendid.
Now the performances, I don’t have to tell you about the performances where actors like Rahul Bose, KK, Javed Jafferi are acting, you all can easily guess it even before the screening that it will be a power packed performances. Shaurya won’t disappoint you at all. Rahul Bose as Sid is brilliant. He fits into the character in ease. KK as Brigadier Pratap is splendid. His performance will compel you to reconsider the climax after the movie. Though Javed Jaffery is in the backseat, still a brilliant performer can’t hide. Deepak Dobriyal didn’t have much dialogue to say, but he performs in silence. Absolutely class. Minisha Lamba looks simple and beautiful as usual and effective as Kavya. Amrita Arora, Seema Biswas did justice to their character.
Shaurya is Samar Khan’s second venture. In “Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye” he goes for a hatke theme. Tough the film didn’t make up to the mark, but showed the director’s capability and in Shaurya Samar Khan proves again that he has that kind potential. He handles the serious issue with such maturity that you won’t believe that Shaurya is Samar Khan’s second venture. Great direction.
On the whole Shaurya is a brilliantly made movie with substance. Those who like to watch some “hatke” movies, then go for Shaurya.
